Thomas Tuchel has revealed that Mateo Kovacic will miss Chelsea’s London derby against Tottenham this weekend due to an injury.
Kovacic suffered a disrupted pre-season where he was introduced into Chelsea’s friendlies later, having struggled with injury. He required strapping on his knee and spent time training away from the first team group while in Las Vegas
Kovacic was left on the bench for last weekend’s game against Everton and is set to miss Tottenham clash this weekend.
Kova is injured, unfortunately, and has issues with his knee,’ Tuchel said on Friday.
‘We decided to take a step back and increase treatment time and reduce the stress that comes from training to have a normal reaction before we start again.’
Chelsea will miss Kovacic’s ability to beat an opposition’s press and get out of very tight spaces. With Jorginho and Kante, it is sometimes quite easy to predict how Chelsea will build from the back and Jorginho showed against Everton that when he is under pressure from an opposition front line, he is quite vulnerable to turning the ball over.
Chelsea will also be without Marcos Alonso against Spurs, He is unlikely to play for the club again as he finalises a transfer to Barcelona this summer.
Tuchel added: “He (Marcos Alonso) is not in training at the moment and tries to finalise his transfer so he will not be available for (Sunday’s) game.”
He has scored three goals against Tottenham, this includes a glorious freekick in the 2019/2020 season and also recorded two assists against Tottenham in all competitions.
After emphatic 4-1 Victoy over Southampton on the opening day, Tottenham travel to Stamford Bridge on Sunday to put end to their woes against Chelsea having won just one of their last 37 matches in all competitions – drawing 12 and losing 24.
