The 29-year-old’s predatory first-half strike broke the record he jointly held with Jimmy Greaves’ as Tottenham’s all-time leading goalscorer, taking him to 267, and handed the advantage in the Premier League title race back to Arsenal.

Spurs may have mixed feelings about their bitter rivals maintaining their five-point advantage, with a game, in hand but this victory over Manchester City was precious for them in their fight for a Champions League place.
Without manager Antonio Conte, who is recuperating at home in Turin after having his gall bladder removed, this was a stirring performances against the champions overseen by the Italian’s assistant Cristian Stellini.
For City it was a severe blow. They had the chance, after Arsenal’s loss away to Everton, to close the gap to just two points, but in their fifth game at this stadium they again lost even if Spurs ended the game with 10-men after the late dismissal of Cristian Romero.
To go past Greaves is some achievement for Kane. As he spoke on the field at full-time, he called it ‘surreal’.

But anybody who has seen his Tottenham career progress over the last six or seven years sensed this moment was coming from some time out. Certainly none will begrudge him. Few footballers score goals with such natural calm as Kane does. If he stays beyond the duration of a contract that expires in the summer of 2024 he will surely score many, many more.
